This work is especially ironic (eye-ronic -- ha!) during Awards Season. Instead of us looking at who's walking down the Red Carpet, the Red Carpet directly confronts us -- the Viewer. Why is it buttressed up against the wall? Did the artist mean to imply a sense of isolation or a feeling of being trapped ("up against the wall")?

Red Carpet by Renée Petropoulos is unforgettable. Wonderful to meet Rosamund Felson too.
ReplyDeleteThat evening after seeing Renee's show I read this text in the article on Heinz Emigolz:
ReplyDelete“I have wallpapered the area around my bed with red brocade,” one inhuman voice recites from d’Annunzio’s diaries, “and hid it behind dividers. I have created this alcove to sleep in purple, the beautiful color of blood.”
Knowing Renee, there's always very specific intent, but if nothing more, it made this text resonate more.
